WORKSHOP ON CAPACITY BUILDING FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS

A two-day capacity building workshop for English language for senior secondary was held at St. Xavier’s School, Gurgaon on July 15 & July 16, 2023.  The resource persons for the same were Ms. Malobika Chattopadhyay, Headmistress, Manav Rachna School and Ms. Ragini - an ELT expert.   Both emphasized on the importance of developing critical thinking skills in classes XI & XII, to make the students ready for the writing of the statements of purpose for the universities, entrance tests, group discussions etc.

The two day workshop dealt with the ideas of enhancing the communication, collaboration critical and creative thinking aspects among the students of the senior secondary school. The pre-tea session encompassed incorporating real life situations - either through an activity, or through videos.  The next round of the session was taken up by Ms. Ragini, who reiterated the need to help the students learn listening skills.  She explained the need for specific objectives while listening and help the students to identify those objectives.  The third session was taken up by Ms. Chattopadhyay on speaking skills. Again the need to discern the way of communication was discussed, which would eventually lead to better answers in the classroom sessions.

The second day sessions by both the ELT experts held a detailed discussion on the blueprint, enhanced writing skills and the question paper pattern for both class XI & XII. They strongly recommended that the students were made to understand the importance of scoring well in English so that their overall performance was not affected.

The session was enjoyable and much was learned on how to build the critical thinking and creative writing skills of the senior secondary students.
