TRAINING OF EVS & SCIENCE TEACHERS FOR CLASSES III TO X

(JANUARY 10 TO 12, 2024)

                                          

 

A three-day workshop was organized at G D Goenka Public School, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi from January 10 to 12, 2024. The resource persons of the workshop were Ms. Pragya, Ms. Vaishali Gupta, Ms. Neeta Rastogi, Ms. Yasmin Khan, Ms. Jowhry, Ravi Kumar, Mr. Samarth M, Mr Muthu Kumar and Ms. Shradha Agarwal. All of them are experts from team GDG and guided the audience on various topics ranging from competency-based teaching of EVS and Science, NEP 2020 & Innovative pedagogies to build 21st century skills, understanding the skills required for processing scientific skills like comparing, measuring, inferring, communicating and building comparisons, and how to create good questions.

 

The resource person Ms. Pragya talked about the difference between learning objectives and learning outcomes at length. She also touched upon teaching science to develop competencies and emphasizing on critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical application of knowledge, incorporating hands-on experiments, encourage inquiry-based learning, and promote collaborative projects. She suggested to assess the students on their ability to analyze, synthesize information, and apply scientific concepts in real-world scenarios.

 

Ms. Gupta threw light on reflecting upon the activities by students with the help of worksheets and quiz that develops scientific temperament in students.

 

According to Ms. Neeta Rastogi, effective science teaching involves hands-on activities, inquiry-based learning, and real-world applications. Encourage curiosity, use visual aids, conduct experiments, relate concepts to everyday life, and foster collaborative discussions. Assessment should include both practical skills and theoretical understanding.

 

Ms Khan took a session on developing subject specific skills for teaching and learning EVS, including constructing knowledge, analytical skills, experimentation and application to real life. Instructional leaders, self-assessment and reflection were amongst the few topics discussed, while

Ms Jowahri took an enriching session on multiple intelligences (HorwardGardner).

 

A session on how to create good questions was also part of the workshop. Creating questions involves formulation, understanding, and relevance. From the student's side, it includes curiosity, comprehension, and clarity. Teachers to focus on fostering critical thinking, gauging understanding, and aligning questions with learning objectives.

 

Overall it was a great learning spread across all the three days full of enriching sessions.
