INTER HOUSE COMPETITION TERM-1, CLASSES VI TO VIII

(MAY 10, 2023)

“A champion is someone who doesn't settle for that day’s practice, that day’s competition, that day’s performance. A champion is someone who is always striving for better results.”

The House system is of great importance to school life. It inculcates the spirit of healthy competition among students and also develops esprit de corps. Manifesting the team based healthy competition on the lines of art and sports alike are the Inter-House competitions; renowned for being the liveliest events in the school calendar. Inter-house competitions help develop students’ social, team-building and organising (amongst other) skills.

The first cycle of Inter House Competitions for the AY 2023-24 unfurled under the theme ‘FOCUS ON THE GOALS, NOT THE OBSTACLES’. The different competitions held under different categories namely Literary, Cultural, Sports and Science and technology included Hindi Story Telling Competition, Folk Dance Competition, Swimming Competition and Movie Making Competitions. The diversity of the competitions stemmed from the fact that this time it was the student body that voted for and selected the competitions thus also developing in them, decision making ability. Participation was open to all students who were offered almost 17 different competitions to choose from. The gusto with which the students took to the competitions overshadowed the diversity of the competitions and stemmed from their sense of ownership in selecting the art and sport forms to compete against each other.

For the Hindi Story Telling Competition, each house was represented by a team of 2-3 students. Students used props and were dressed according to the characters of the story. The Folk Dance Competition saw entries from all four houses in the form of teams of 8-10 students. The foot tapping music from Gujrat, Punjab and Rajasthan filled the Auditorium with a spirit of joi de vivre. The students showcased self created movies on the theme and left the audience in awe. The Swimming Competition was conducted in the swimming pool area of the school. Freestyle events of 25m were organised for boys and girls separately followed by relay races.

It was evident that the students enjoyed competing against one another as they swam or danced, created movies or told stories. The student’s enthusiasm shone through each of their activities and infused the same even amongst the teachers. To set the ball rolling, the school was made aware of the rules of the competition and the guidelines.

Ms. Anuradha Handa, esteemed Principal GDGPS lauded the efforts of the students and her presence throughout the competition spurred the teams to raise their levels even higher. Middle Wing Headmistress Ms. Shalini Tandon mingled with the competitors and audience alike to motivate and increase their participation. The novel concept of students choosing the competitions and putting their best foot forward was well received by one and all and shone through in stupendous performances. These knowledge enriching competitions were enjoyed by the judges, participants, teachers and audience alike.
