(SEPTEMBER 27, 2024)
"Leisure is not idleness, but rather the opportunity to do what we really enjoy."
- John Lubbock
True to its ethos of fostering holistic development, G D Goenka Public School, Sector 48, Gurugram, has always encouraged students to channel their learning and abilities beyond the classroom. As part of this ongoing commitment, the school’s Class VIII students recently organised a remarkable session on constructive leisure activities for the school’s bus drivers and conductors. This initiative, guided by the school counsellors, was aimed at promoting mental well-being, personal growth, and enhancing the quality of life for these vital members of the school community.
The session underscored the importance of effectively utilising leisure time through activities that promote relaxation, creativity, and physical health. Topics covered included mindfulness and stress management techniques, the value of reading, simple exercise routines for physical fitness and creative hobbies such as drawing, painting, and writing. The students, under the insightful guidance of the school counsellors, shared practical mindfulness exercises and breathing techniques that can help reduce stress and improve focus. They emphasised the lifelong benefits of reading, providing participants with a curated list of recommended books for various interests. Recognizing the importance of physical health, the students also demonstrated easy-to-follow exercises that could be performed in limited spaces. Additionally, participants were encouraged to explore new hobbies, which would not only enrich their lives but also boost their confidence and skills.
This outreach session is a testament to the vision of the school’s Principal, Ms. Anuradha Handa, who has consistently encouraged students to contribute meaningfully to society and work towards the betterment of the community. Her belief in empowering students to become responsible and empathetic citizens is deeply embedded in the school's ethos. Ms. Handa has always advocated for initiatives that nurture both academic and personal growth, ensuring that students gain a balanced and well-rounded education.
Furthermore, the Middle Wing Headmistress, Ms. Shalini Tandon, played a pivotal role in guiding and supporting this endeavour. She has been instrumental in fostering leadership and responsibility among students, constantly encouraging them to take on challenges that promote learning beyond textbooks. Her unwavering support has ensured that students are well-prepared to undertake such meaningful projects with confidence and purpose.
The reflections shared by the students after the session revealed a deep sense of fulfilment and growth. They expressed how this experience taught them valuable lessons in empathy, communication, and the importance of mental well-being for everyone.
In conclusion, the session on constructive leisure activities was a resounding success. The Class VIII students showcased exceptional leadership, compassion, and communication skills, equipping the bus drivers and conductors with practical strategies to enhance their leisure time. This initiative highlights the school’s dedication to holistic development and to shape students into compassionate, socially conscious individuals ready to contribute positively to society.
